BBC Pushes PPE Rules for Riders, Ignores Our Bus Lane Fight

Fellow riders, the BBC’s at it again: hyping rules that shackle us while burying our fight for safer roads. Their latest story (April 29, 2025) bangs on about mandatory protective gear—PPE like jackets and gloves—after a Suffolk crash (BBC News). MAG and most riders say hell no to more red tape, but the BBC didn’t ask us. Meanwhile, our petition, with nearly 20,000 signatures, demands bus lane access to prevent crashes—the same access cyclists get by default. Cyclists dodge helmet laws, yet we’re slammed with PPE? This double standard on vulnerable two-wheelers is nonsense. Let’s call it out and roar to 100,000 signatures to make the DfT listen.

BBC Pushes PPE Rules for Riders

BBC’s Bias: Rules Over Riders

The BBC’s piece pushes PPE as a safety fix, quoting a campaigner and RoSPA, but rider voices? Zilch. It’s like we don’t exist. They paint us as reckless, needing gear to survive crashes, when we’re fighting for bus lanes to avoid them. Our petition (sign here) has 18,000+ signatures, backed by 55 councils and a 2024 consultation showing most agree. Yet, the BBC gives it no airtime. Why? Because it’s our idea, not their agenda.

Mainstream thinking on road safety is flat-out contradictory for two-wheeled road users. Cyclists and motorcyclists are equally vulnerable—both at the mercy of cars and lorries—but the lens is wildly different. Cyclists cruise into bus lanes by default, a safety buffer we’re begging for. They’re not legally required to wear crash helmets, unlike us, who’ve been stuck with that law since 1973. Now the BBC’s boosting PPE mandates to pile on more, while our petition for bus lanes—a proven safety fix used by half the UK’s bus lanes—gets buried. This isn’t oversight; it’s a slap to every rider who’s dodged a close call.

Bus Lanes: Our Safety, Our Right

We’re not here to sulk—we’re here to solve. Our petition demands default motorcycle access to bus lanes, just like cyclists have, with councils free to opt out. It’s about keeping us alive and moving:

  • Safety: Bus lanes shield us from tailgaters and lane-changers. 55 councils already allow it, cutting collision risks.

  • Congestion: We slice through traffic, unlike cars clogging cities.

  • Fairness: Cyclists get bus lanes and no helmet laws; we’re as vulnerable but treated like outcasts.

The DfT’s “no evidence” excuse is garbage—half the UK’s bus lanes and a consultation prove them wrong. The BBC could call this out, but they’d rather parrot PPE rules than back 20,000 riders. So, we’re making our own noise.

20,000 Riders Strong—Let’s Hit 100,000

We’re inches from 20,000 signatures—a massive middle finger to the DfT and BBC’s silence. But we need 100,000 by August 28, 2025, to force a parliamentary debate and shred their excuses. The BBC won’t lift a finger—they’re too busy with crash stories or rules we reject. It’s on us to shake the ground.

Here’s how you fight back:

  • Sign the petition: Add your name for bus lane access like cyclists have. It’s 30 seconds that hit hard. (Click here)

  • Spread it: Text five mates, post on X with #Riders4BusLanes, or rally your club. Every signature’s a jab at the BBC’s blind spot.

  • Share your story: Why bus lanes? Comment below or tag us on X. Maybe it’s a near-miss a bus lane could’ve saved.

Riders, Let’s Steal the Headlines

The BBC’s PPE obsession, while ignoring our bus lane fight and cyclists’ bus lane access, shows they don’t get us. Cyclists and riders face the same risks, yet they’re handed safety perks we’re denied. Every signature tells the DfT and BBC we’re not invisible. Let’s hit 100,000 and write headlines that scream: riders demand equal safety.
